BRIEF
This revolutionary masterpiece by George Orwell remains one of my personal favourites among his writings. While reading this book, it ignited an inspiration in me to create an illustration that would go on to be licensed by De Arbeiderspers for the Dutch paperback edition of 1984.
INSIGHTS
The writing of this book creates a pervasive sense of dystopia and the constant scrutiny by a totalitarian government, which inspired me to capture this feeling in an illustration. My aim was to create an image that was both eye-catching and unsettling, effectively conveying the unsettling nature of the book's themes.
SOLUTION
Through experimenting with optical illusions, I was able to create an illustration featuring many wide-open eyes that could produce a sense of unease and discomfort for the viewer. By studying how the human eye perceives movement, I was able to create a design that gave the impression of constant motion, drawing the viewer deeper into the uncomfortable atmosphere of the illustration.
